The only record that the family has is a picture of James in his uniform. The picture was in the possession of daughter Mollie Jane Adkins Dalton in 1999. James was wounded in the war hip wound and was sent home. He received a pension from the Government until his death for this war wound. He also worked for the Government as Quartermaster. Once before leaving for War and then again in 1922. On the marriage application of 1922 James says that he is divorced from first wife. However, unable to locate divorce record from second wife, Bertha Compton Adkins. There were two common-law-marriages, the first to Carrie Elizabeth Willis which produced four children and the last one to Helen Marie Hopkins which produced no children. James and Carrie separated 8 months after the birth of their youngest son, Charles Robert Adkins in 1934. In 1944 Carrie Willis Adkins filed for divorce, however, neither party showed up in court so divorce was never granted. Kentucky Law in the 1940's stated that you had to file for a divorce in common-law-marriages if the parties had lived together for more then ten years.
