Cause of his death was ASHDE Congestive Heart Failure. General Notes: [Watts_New.FTW] [Strachan121102.ftw] James was 41 years old when he applied for his Social Security Card November 25, 1938. He lived at 1017 Story Avenue Louisville, KY. James attendedgraduated grade school from 1903 to 1911. He also attended and graduated from Pikeville College 1912 to 1916. James also attended Spencerian Commercial College in Louisville, KY receiving a degree in Bookkeeping. NOTE: All of the previous information was obtained from FBI Report dated November 5, 1943. This report was requested because James had applied for a job with the Federal Government at the Q.M. Corps, Storage Division, Jeffersonville, IN. At the time of employment application, James was working for L And N Railroad, 10th and Broadway, Louisville, KY. On his application for employment he listed the following jobs, all in Louisville: Adler Manufacturing Co., 29th And Chestnut, Rubber And Inspector 9 years. Miller Haisohd Co., 1331 Jefferson, Salesman, 2 years. L And N Raildroad, 10th And Broadway, Clerk, 2 years. Ford Motor Co., Western Parkway, Refinisher, 3 years. James Edward Adkins, Sr. served in World War I from November 12, 1916 to August 12, 1919, service number is 71747, however, due to a fire in the 1970's most of the records for World War I were destroyed. The only record that the family has is a picture of James in his uniform. The picture was in the possession of daughter Mollie Jane Adkins Dalton in 1999. James was wounded in the war hip wound and was sent home. He received a pension from the Government until his death for this war wound. He also worked for the Government as Quartermaster. First at the Jeffersonville, Indiana facility and later at the Richmond, Virginia facility until his retirement June 12, 1959. Papa Jim died at the age of 75. His death is recorded in Pike County Death Records, Volume 048. In Kentucky Death Records, Volume 72. Death Certificate No. 23956. James has been married twice. Once before leaving for War and then again in 1922. On the marriage application of 1922 James says that he is divorced from first wife. However, unable to locate divorce record from second wife, Bertha Compton Adkins. There were two common-law-marriages, the first to Carrie Elizabeth Willis which produced four children and the last one to Helen Marie Hopkins which produced no children. James and Carrie separated 8 months after the birth of their youngest son, Charles Robert Adkins in 1934. In 1944 Carrie Willis Adkins filed for divorce, however, neither party showed up in court so divorce was never granted. Kentucky Law in the 1940's stated that you had to file for a divorce in common-law-marriages if the parties had lived together for more then ten years. James and Carrie had been together since early 1923.
